ODM leader Raila Odinga has announced that he will soon reveal his next political course after engaging in consultations with his supporters and allies. Speaking on Monday at State House, Mombasa, following discussions with President William Ruto, Raila emphasized the importance of strategic deliberations before making a public declaration.
Consultations Ahead of Political Decision
“I am going to consult widely, and in due course, we will announce our way forward,” Raila stated, signaling his intent to engage with his political base before outlining his future plans.
The meeting between Raila and Ruto centered on the recently concluded African Union Commission (AUC) elections, where Raila lost to Djibouti’s Mahamoud Ali Youssouf in the seventh round after securing 33 votes. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki was also in attendance.
Raila Expresses Readiness for National Unity
Raila reiterated that ODM is open to working with other political parties to foster national unity. He also took the opportunity to express gratitude to President Ruto for his unwavering support throughout his AUC campaign.
“I want to thank my younger brother Ruto, who stood by me. He never asked me to run; he only came in after I had made my decision,” Raila explained.
He further acknowledged Ruto’s active involvement in his campaign, stating, “He did not just support me in words but also in action. He put up machinery to help the campaign.”
Government’s Support During the Campaign
Raila credited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for facilitating his engagements during the campaign period, ensuring that he secured key diplomatic meetings.
President Ruto commended Raila for uniting Kenyans across political divides through his candidacy, reaffirming that his government was fully behind his bid.
“His candidature brought all Kenyans together from different political sides,” Ruto said, adding that Raila had represented Kenya exceptionally well on the continental stage.
Campaign Funding and Expenditure
Addressing concerns over campaign expenditure, Raila clarified that funds were primarily allocated to transport and official engagements rather than luxury.
“We were eating what we were given, and many countries generously provided accommodation,” he stated, dismissing any claims of excessive spending.
As Raila prepares for his next political move, all eyes remain on his consultations and the direction he will take in shaping Kenya’s political landscape.
