Geovany Quenda has already sent Cole Palmer a brilliant message ahead of a potential transfer to Chelsea. The 17-year-old winger has suddenly been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge as the Blues look to sign another exciting young player.
football.london understands Chelsea have agreed to sign Quenda from Sporting CP for £40m. The Portugal Under-21 international, who will join the West Londoners at the end of next season, has signed a seven-year contract, which includes the option of a further 12 months.
Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim handed Quenda his Portuguese top-flight debut in August 2024 during his time at Sporting, starting in a 3-1 win over Rio Ave. The teenager made a great first impression and he quickly became a key player for Sporting.
Quenda has remained a regular in the starting lineup following the Portuguese tactician's move to United, appearing more so as left-winger. He’s featured 25 times in the Primeira Liga this season, scoring one goal and providing five assists.
Playing a key role in Rui Borges' side, Quenda has helped Sporting climb to the top of the table. The winger nearly fired the Lions to glory in the Allianz Cup final at the start of the year, finding the net in an 8-7 penalty shootout defeat to Benfica.
Quenda scored Sporting's seventh spot-kick before Florentino put the Eagles back into the lead. Then, Francisco Trincao missed, handing over a piece of silverware to the club’s bitter rivals.
When Quenda beat Anatoliy Trubin from 12-yards, he paid tribute to Palmer and copied his iconic 'cold' celebration. Desire Doue also repeated the Chelsea star's celebration when Paris Saint-Germain knocked Liverpool out of the Champions League earlier this month.
Palmer first unveiled the 'cold' celebration during Chelsea's 3-2 win over Luton Town in the Premier League, back in December 2023. Speaking to reporters after the game, the Blues midfielder said: "My boy Morgs did one for Middlesbrough, so I told him I’d do it too if I scored."
Then, after a match between Aston Villa and Chelsea last season, Morgan Rogers joked: "Yeah, he definitely copied me! It’s my celebration. Check the timeline, I did it first."
Rogers has since conceded ownership of the trademark celebration. Speaking to TNT Sports after Aston Villa's win over Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League, he said: "I'll let him have it. He's scored 40 goals or something stupid. Can't really argue with that, can I?"
