Mohamed Salah has admitted that he was shy when he first joined Chelsea and how an encounter with Newcastle United sparked a surprise welcome.
The 32-year-old is now well renowned for his exploits in the north west with Liverpool after leaving Stamford Bridge in 2016. Salah is closing in on his second Premier League crown after his 25 top-flight goals have fired the Anfield club to a 13-point lead at the summit.
Salah made 13 league appearances for the Blues, scoring just twice, in his two-year stint in west London. He spent time on loan at Fiorentina and AS Roma before he made his Serie A switch permanent in 2016 – signing terms in the Italian capital.
The Egyptian has revealed how his spell at Chelsea earned a friendship with Brazilian defender David Luiz.
"Maybe I spoke a couple of times with David Luiz [since leaving], I think they were very close to me, especially David when I was in Chelsea," Salah told Optus Sports. “I was quite young and was shy at that time, I don’t know what happened now but at that time, I was shy.
"I was always alone so David was like an older brother, tried to take care of me and look after me all the time. It was tough, very intense, go for everything, I remember the first game I played was Newcastle, I was tackled from the side… 'boom' and I thought, 'how am I going to survive and I need to go the gym'."
Liverpool are due to travel to the capital in May as they face Chelsea with four games remaining. Enzo Maresca’s side will be hoping to avenge their 2-1 defeat at Anfield in October, however they could have significant bearing on the Premier League title race when they travel to Arsenal on March 16.
With their lead looking seemingly unassailable, many believe Arne Slot's side will complete the job. But for Salah, he is "desperate" to win a second Premier League winner's medal.
He added: "It's an incredible day [Liverpool trophy parade], that's why I'm really desperate to win the Premier League with the club now, just have the same day as this one. It's going to be unforgettable because I know how much it means to win the Premier League."
