Geovany Quenda has broken his silence on social media after Chelsea reached an agreement with Sporting CP to sign the 17-year-old Portugal wonderkid.
News emerged on Friday that the west London club had agreed a fee in the region of £40million to snap-up the youngster. football.london understands that Quenda will join Chelsea at the end of next season having agreed a seven-year contract, with the option of a further year.
The young winger joined Sporting's academy in 2019 and he broke through into the first team at the beginning of this campaign. He was handed his senior debut for the club by former manager Ruben Amorim, who had hoped to bring him to Manchester United.
Quenda is already a Portuguese youth international, but he has now been called-up to the senior side by national team coach Roberto Martinez. Posting for the first time since news of his move to Chelsea broke in the media, the player shared the squad announcement on his Instagram story.
Future Chelsea teammate Pedro Neto has also been called up and Quenda could make his senior Portugal debut in their Nations League quarter-final tie against Denmark. Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Felix and Diogo Jota are also among the big names in the squad.
Quenda has scored two goals and registered eight assists in 43 appearances across all competitions so far this season. One of those assists came in the Champions League league phase against Manchester City in November.
Sporting finished just inside the top-24 teams, but were ultimately knocked out of the competition by Borussia Dortmund in the play-offs. Domestically, they are still top of the Portuguese league and are three points clear of Benfica, although their rivals do have a game-in-hand.
Chelsea, on the other hand, are battling it out this season in the UEFA Conference League following their sixth-placed finish in the Premier League under Mauricio Pochettino last season. Under Enzo Maresca, this term, they remain among several clubs in contention to qualify in the top-four.
