The final international break of the 2024/25 season is now upon us and for Chelsea, many of their players will get the opportunity to work closely with Enzo Maresca and his backroom staff over the next couple of weeks.
There will be just nine matches left of the Premier League season once club football resumes in two weeks' time as the Blues look to improve for the final stretch of the campaign. As it stands, Chelsea sit in fourth-place in the top-flight table, just one point above Manchester City in fifth and two ahead of Newcastle United, who have played a game less than the west Londoners.
Fifth-place should be enough to qualify for the Champions League and be playing in Europe's elite competition next season with England way out at the top of UEFA's coefficient rankings at the moment. However, Maresca will be aiming to finish inside the top four in his debut season at Stamford Bridge.
The next fortnight could be crucial as the head coach gets to work closely with some players, those that have not been selected for international duty, while a lot of his stars will be around the world representing their countries. There are 15 first-team Chelsea players set to be at Cobham over the next two weeks and will be joined by a flurry of academy stars in order to bring the numbers up.
Cole Palmer was left out of the Chelsea squad for Sunday’s defeat at Arsenal with a muscular injury. The results of his scan from Monday have not been made public yet, but he was not spotted at St. Georges Park on Monday with the rest of his England teammates. Palmer is widely expected to withdraw from Thomas Tuchel’s first squad as Three Lions boss.
Meanwhile, Robert Sanchez has not been selected in the Spain squad for the two legs of their Nations League quarter-final against the Netherlands. Unai Simon of Athletic Club, Alex Remiro from Real Sociedad and Arsenal’s David Raya are the goalkeepers that have been selected by Luis de la Fuente. Marc Cucurella, Sanchez’s Chelsea colleague, has been included in the squad.
Wesley Fofana, who recently returned from a lengthy hamstring injury, will work at Cobham over the next couple of weeks as he bids to return to his prime condition before the end of the season. Benoit Badiashile, too, is in a similar boat to his French compatriot. Badiashile made his return for the Blues in the Conference League round of 16 first-leg win against Copenhagen just shy of two weeks ago and has not been selected for the upcoming international matches.
Tosin Adarabioyo has never been capped by England and will remain in Cobham for the remainder of the month and the same goes for Trevoh Chalobah. Aaron Anselmino, also, has not been selected by Argentina and will work behind the scenes as he awaits his first-team debut for the west London club.
Malo Gusto was a surprise inclusion in the squad at the weekend with the French defender returning from his injury sooner than expected. The right-back will be working on his fitness over the next couple of weeks and will be hoping to rediscover his form, with plenty of criticism over his performances this season.
Romeo Lavia is not in the Belgium squad and will work on his fitness over the next two weeks. The Belgian midfielder came on in the final 10 minutes of Chelsea’s defeat at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon in what was his first appearance in over two months, while Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Mathis Amougou will also stay back in Cobham.
Jadon Sancho’s form has been disappointing of late and it is no surprise he has not been selected by Tuchel for the England squad. Noni Madueke had been a regular in the Three Lions squad as of late but has not played since February 14 due to injury, although the winger is expected back after the break.
The same can be said for Nicolas Jackson, who will not team up with his Senegal colleagues. Christopher Nkunku, meanwhile, has been left out of the France squad for their upcoming fixtures with the 27-year-old not being at his best in recent games for Chelsea.
Chelsea players to work in Cobham during international break: Sanchez, Fofana, Badiashile, Tosin, Chalobah, Anselmino, Gusto, Lavia, Dewsbury-Hall, Amougou, Palmer, Sancho, Madueke, Jackson, Nkunku.
