Chelsea have been handed an update on the futures of Manchester United duo Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho.
The Blues were heavily linked with signing both Mainoo and Garnacho during the January transfer window. In the end, Mathis Amougou was the only new addition to the Chelsea squad after the turn of the year, but that has not stopped rumours that the United duo may still be targets.
Garnacho, in particular, was heavily linked with a move away from United in January. Serie A outfit Napoli were widely reported to be interested in signing the Argentina international, while Chelsea were mentioned as apparently showing an interest before it was confirmed that Garnacho would be remaining at Old Trafford rather than moving to Stamford Bridge.
Mainoo was also linked with signing for Chelsea in January but is currently sidelined with a muscle injury. United had been open to the departures of the young duo due to concerns around being compliant with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability rules.
Now, a fresh update has emerged about both United players which may affect Chelsea's interest in the pair. According to the Manchester Evening News, United have a chance to avoid being forced to sell either Mainoo or Garnacho in the summer transfer window, provided they can raise funds through other sales.
Marcus Rashford's loan deal to Aston Villa is thought to include a buy option worth £40million, which would represent pure profit for United for Profit & Sustainability Rules (PSR) should the deal go through. The report claims that selling Rashford to Villa for that amount would allow United to be able to keep Mainoo and Garnacho at the club and avoid a sale to comply with financial rules.
It remains to be seen if Chelsea's reported interest turns out to be genuine, or if the Blues still have plans to try and sign either of the United duo when the summer transfer window opens at the end of the season.
