Chelsea reportedly can pay Manchester United a significant penalty fee not to sign Jadon Sancho this summer transfer window.
Sancho has played 29 matches for the Blues this season but has flattered to deceive after making a strong start after arriving. Since assisting three goals in his first three Premier League matches, the winger has managed just one more in the league.
In front of goal, after scoring in back-to-back games against Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur in early December, Sancho has not found the back of the net again. However, he does remain a regular for head coach Enzo Maresca.
As such, The i Paper reports that Chelsea still plan to honour their obligation to buy the player for £25million this summer. They are due to do so by finishing above 14th place in the Premier League table, a position they are currently 15 points clear of with nine matches remaining.
The publication does, though, claim there is an option for the Blues to back out of the agreement because of a clause in the deal. Doing so would see them incur a penalty fee, which is said to be significant.
The Daily Mail also claim that Sancho did not agree terms with the Blues before joining on deadline day. Sancho is still under contract at Man United – and are still paying part of his £250,000 weekly wages – until the end of next season, so he would return to his parent club if Chelsea decide to get out of their obligation.
As the Man United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe acknowledged recently, they are due to pay Borussia Dortmund another £17million this summer as part of the £73million deal to sign him from them four years ago. Presumably, any penalty fee would go some way to covering that imminent outgoing.
