LoginKisii county in a spot after woman dies of prolonged labour

Kisii Governor Simba Arati when appeared before the Senate Commitee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations at Bunge Towers,Nairobi . November 21st,2024. [FILE,Standard]A section of Kisii residents have expressed their anger at governor Simba Arati’s administration after a 27-year-old woman died at a local dispensary after prolonged labour pains.
The residents said Arati’s administration is to blame for the unfortunate incident for failing to provide adequate supplies to handle emergencies.
The deceased, Phanice Ratemo from Itare village in Nyangoso, was admitted at Magena Dispensary on Monday night after she started to experience labour pain.
Family members said she was then told to wait for the due time for delivery.“The nurse who received her examined her and told her to wait since the birth canal was yet to be ready for the delivery. She, however, was in pain and was writhing with great discomfort. They never attended to her pain,” one of the family members told journalists.
According to the family, the deceased stayed with the pain for the entire Monday night till Tuesday without any emergency response until she unfortunately died in the evening.
.Why KDF will still be back on the streets in case of violent protestsKisii ordered to pay Sh217m in salary arrearsOkenyuri seeks statement on status of polio vaccinesSenator Okenyuri dons school uniform, urges students to embrace reading cultureHer death attracted public outcry as residents accused the hospital’s management of failing to handle the patient properly by doing a proper diagnosis of any possible underlying health threat.“Does it mean that the hospital staff could not have sensed there could be more than met the eye when the woman was writhing in pain the entire night and day and yet the birth canal was not for delivery? There must have been a high level of negligence,” the relative said.
After the news went viral on social media, Governor Arati moved to the facility to for a fact-finding mission and ruled out possibilities of negligence.“The nurse on duty who was helping the mother while in admission to the facility is the same one who has had a clean record of midwifery in this facility for many years. However, we are trying to establish all the facts surrounding the unfortunate incident,” Arati told the resident who had milled the facility.
But Kisii Woman Rep Dorice Donya, who has been a critic of the administration of Arati, said it was unfortunate that the county leadership had not done enough in equipping primary healthcare facilities.“It is sad that we have lost the life of a mother and her unborn baby at the very place where they would have been saved. This is not an isolated case because as a leader, I have been receiving numerous calls about the severe challenges our hospitals have, ranging from lack of medicines, diagnostic tools and non-committed health staffs. But every time we speak this out, the issues are politicised,” Donya said.
Her sentiments were echoed by Nominated Senator Esther Okenyuri who also lamented the loss saying it should have been prevented had there been proper attention on the patient.
“An expectant mother waiting in pain for more than 24 hours without nurses sensing any alarm is a heartache to us sympathizers. However, I urge all residents to remain calm as investigators do their work. My thoughts and prayers are with the family,” Okenyuri said. She assured the family that she will ensure the truth is known about the cause of the death.

“As a Senator, I will do the needful in ensuring the family gets justice,” Okenyuri said.

The body of the deceased is being preserved at the Ogembo Hospital mortuary.

Loading Article…For the best experience, please enable JavaScript in your browser settings.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen was yesterday forced to cut short his speech following an interruption by the mother of missing fisherman Brian Odhiambo.Odhiambo’s mother, Elizabeth Auma was among the locals who had gathered at the Shabaab grounds in Nakuru during the launch of the mobile registration drive of the National Identity card presided over by Murkomen.
Donned in a t-shirt with writing ‘Justice for my son’, Auma did all she could to reach the CS despite efforts by the security personnel to block her.Murkomen also intervened and asked the security personnel to allow Auma to reach him at the podium promising to have her issue addressed. It is after a short talk that Auma was ushered into a tent where government officials were.
“Allow her to come, I feel for her and after this, I will talk to her, her issue will be addressed,” said Murkomen.
Murkomen assured Auma that the government is in solidarity with the family and will do all it can to hold KWS officers into account until they reveal the whereabouts of her son.
The officers according to Murkomen should have apprehended Odhiambo and presented him before a court of law.
“As a government, we will not allow such a situation where a Kenyan goes missing without being accounted for. That is not why government is in place, government is in place to ensure lives are protected,” he said.
On Monday Directorate of Criminal Investigations officers, Kenya Police, human rights activists, and journalists alongside Odhiambo’s grieving family entered the Lake Nakuru National Park in a search mission.
The search at the lake followed a claim by a whistle-blower that he had information on where the Odhiambo’s body was dumped.
Odhiambo disappeared on January 18, 2025, under circumstances that security officers at the park cannot explain.
Murkomen noted that the government is very concerned about the issue of insecurity in Nakuru and added that they have held meetings with the President.
He noted that the issues around Lake Nakuru are wanting and must be addressed.
The CS said a few officers within the Kenya Wildlife Services are engaged in illegal fishing in the lake and using their powers to fight locals.
The officers he noted have exposed the people to danger for allowing fishing despite the revelation that the fish from the lake is harmful for human consumption.
“Instead of preventing the people from fishing, the officers are now competing with the locals fighting them and protecting their illegal businesses,” he said.
The CS said detectives are almost done with their investigations and the KWS officers involved will be arrested and charged and dismissed.
Murkomen noted that the launch of the mobile registration services is meant to bring services close to the people.
“More mobile outreaches are still in the pipeline. Our ministry is committed to expanding the availability of identity enrolment to Kenyans,” he said.
He said the issuance of IDs should not be politicised.
The CS also gazetted the removal of Sh300 for new ID applicants.

LoginOver taxation blow to education standards, says KUPPET
Loading Article…For the best experience, please enable JavaScript in your browser settings.
Teachers drawn from the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) listen to financial advice from Malindi businessman Alfred Agunga who encouraged them to engage in at least three income streams to cope with the high cost of living and taxes on their pay slips.[Nehemiah Okwembah/Standard]Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) officials have decried high taxation, saying it had “suffocated” the teachers’ ability to afford living expenses.KUPPET officials in Kilifi and Tana River counties said teachers are now forced to engage in moonlighting, dealing a blow to the standards of education in the country.
The Secretary General of KUPPET in Kilifi County, Omollo Koppolo, and his Tana River counterpart, Omondi Oluoch said other teachers are forced to take expensive loans to finance their lives.
They spoke in Malindi during a financial literacy meeting for teachers organised by Malindi MP Amina Mnyazi and the KUPPET and Malindi businessman Alfred Agunga.
The KUPPET leadership urged the teachers to engage in side hustles to cushion themselves against the high cost of living and the effects of a shrinking pay slip.Agunga said that teachers were among government employees being suffocated and taxed on a meager salary, hence pushing them into poverty.
“What I am telling you as teachers is something that will not take your time from your class, but something that you can do for a long time. What I mean is that two streams or three streams of income are the best you can ever have in your life,” said Agunga.
He encouraged them to venture into agriculture since it was the most sustainable and promising venture at the moment that would enable them to earn extra money to complement their salaries.“Right now, agriculture is where everyone is looking, and in the next five to ten years, you will reap huge returns to complement what you earn in the teaching profession,” he added.
He said teachers have been suffering because of bad financial decisions that make them subject to poverty after retirement. He said a teacher should, for example obtain a Sh2 million loan to build a house so as to move from a rental house and then end up being deducted a lot of money for years.
“The population is growing, and educated people are running away from the farms, leaving a gap for people to invest,” he said.
Mnyazi said that as leaders, they will not keep quiet even if they are in a broad-based government if things are not going right, adding that they will speak out if teachers are overtaxed, which makes them get peanuts in the form of salaries.“We are in the broad-based government, but we will speak out when the government burdens our people with taxes with meager salaries, and when teachers cry out about more deductions in their pay slips, we will call the government out,” she said.

At the same time, Embakasi East member of parliament Babu Owino, who addressed the same teachers, slammed President William Ruto for contributing to the ailing education system in the country, especially with the new proposal to make mathematics an optional subject.

LoginUpkeep money leads to murder, suicide of a mother and her baby

Shot of police tape enclosing a forensic investigator investigating a dead body.[FILE/Standard]There was shock at a village in Homa Bay County after a mother and her baby girl were found dead in a manner suspected to be murder and suicide that resulted from a love triangle.
The woman identified as Christine Awuor, 23, and her six month old daughter Shaniz Randy were found dead at Gateway Village in the outskirts of Sindo Town, Suba Central Sub-county.
Awuor’s body was found dangling on a sisal rope that was tied to the roof in her rental house on Monday evening.Randy’s body was found on the floor. It is suspected that Awuor strangled Randy before she took away her life.
It was reported that Awuor decided to commit the ordeal after she got infuriated that her boyfriend who impregnated her was not providing her with resources for upkeep adequately.According to the area Sub-county Police Commander Caxton Ndunda, Awuor left a note which accused the boyfriend of failing to provide her and her child with upkeep despite being the child’s father.
“The woman left a suicide note in which she indicated that her boyfriend who impregnated her had refused to take care of her and the baby. This is what is suspected to have been the reason for her suicide,” Ndunda said.
Ndunda said the woman ought to have sought a solution from government officials, elders, families or religious leaders.“If the upkeep was the issue, the woman ought to have come to our officers to refer her to the department of children for assistance. I tell residents that suicide does not solve any problem. Let them seek guidance and counseling from leaders in the society,” Ndunda said.
Awuor who is a resident of Suna East Sub-county in Migori County was operating an M-PESA shop in Sindo Town.It seemed Awuor had a protracted love issues with the boyfriend.
According to the Assistant Chief of Sindo Sub-location Caroline Ngere, Awuor used to complain of the boyfriend’s conduct.
At one time, she had accused him in the local administrator’s office over what was happening in their relationship.“It seemed the woman loved her boyfriend so much. She had raised complaints in our office and the complaints revolved around love issues. At times she could complain that the man was not receiving her calls,” Ngere said.

She advised that love issues should not culminate in suicide.

The construction site where expansion of Homa Bay State Lodge takes place. There is controversy between the Catholic Church and the State over the project.[James Omoro, Standard].The Catholic Church has locked horns with the government over the ongoing expansion of Homa Bay State Lodge ahead of President William Ruto’s visit in June.
President Ruto is set to preside over this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations at Raila Odinga Stadium.
The President’s tour has led to an ongoing expansion at Homa Bay State Lodge where he is expected to hold meetings. The project has seen some residents complain that they have been evicted from their homes without timely notices.

One of the affected residents said he was given a notice of four hours to vacate his home on Thursday last week.
“We ought to have been given adequate time to plan for relocation because for my case, I have children,” he said, adding that he has the land’s ownership documents.
The Catholic Priest in charge of St Paul’s Homa Bay Parish Romanus Ageng’a told the government to give the project a human face. He said the one-day visit should not destabilize families.“The President is coming to Homa Bay for one day. But let that visit not be used as a tool for causing discomfort to families,” Ageng’a said.
Fr Ageng’a said the manner in which families were evicted to pay way for the construction was uncalled for.“One of our faithful was evicted in a very inhuman manner. Let the government have human face in implementing this project,” Rev Ageng’a said.
He also expressed concerns they had heard that government also wanted to take part of the church’s land.
“Let the government ensure adequate public participation to ensure that voice of the people is heard. Public participation enhances harmony in implementation of projects,” Ageng’a saidHoma Bay County Commissioner Moses Lilan said he had not received any complaints from neither the church nor the affected civilians.
